Moose of Anchorage

Moose are a part of living here in Alaska. We see them so often and I love to observe them. They can be troublesome however, I totaled my car on one back in 1998. I went up to Glenn Alps today to see if there were any moose up there. On the way there, I found this guy wondering around the golf course.

These photos are from Glenn Alps. There was one bull with a group of females around him. I hiked down to photograph a little closer.

This smaller bull came around sniffing at the females. The large bull quickly chased him off.

Wow, he’s a healthy moose. The girls should want his DNA.

Mike, how dangerous is a bull moose when he’s protecting his harem? Did he mind you being around or where you a good distance away? I know I am leery of our little white tailed deer bucks during the rut.

Scott, I have found the bulls to be much less aggressive than the females. As I hike in I judge whether the moose are in the mood for a person being around. You can see signs that they are not comfortable and I don’t try to get too close. I was fairly close with this group although I stayed near a group of trees at all times.

Thanks, Mike. The more you know about an animal, the safer we can approach them without stressing either them or us. Good idea staying near some trees.

Scott, when you come up to visit I’d suggest you never approach a moose. I’ve found them to be extremely unpredictable, and would hate for you to get stomped. I can tell you from personal experience that they can go from docile to charging in the blink of an eye.

This is true, you have to be smart about it. Sometimes you have no choice, you come around the corner on your mountain bike and there stands a moose or one comes into the yard with your kids around. I have been charged several times, twice in my own yard. I totaled my car on a moose in 1998 and a bear in 2003.
