I was going to pick some favorite Aurora photos from the month of March to post. I could not get past one night! The 8th of March was quite a show. I spent the entire night out with both my cameras taking hundreds of photos. Here are a few of my favorite Northern Lights photos from that night. Be sure to check out the time lapse of this night too. http://youtu.be/6KcNxxB9tMc?hd=1

After telling our mutual friend Bridget McL… about the incredible night of March 8th and my frustrations trying to get my camera to work, she suggested I visit your website and befriend you on facebook. I’m glad she did. You captured the sky show so beautifully!

It was my first time trying to shoot the Northern Lights and I’m still getting used to my Nikon D7000. BY the time I figured out some setting to get the photos to snap, it was 3 am. Could you please advise me (for future reference) what setting you used to capture these incredible photos?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

    Liane,

It really depends on the equipment you use so my settings may not match up to yours. I don’t know much about Nikons, I shot Canon. Most shots I like to have the shutter speed as fast as I can get, I also open the aperture wide open and then use my ISO settings to get the right exposure. The settings are different for every display because of the brightness of the Aurora. For that particular night I was using a shutter speed of 3.2s, f2.8, ISO 1250 on my Canon 5D mark II. Give that a try next time, you may have to increase you shutter speed or ISO to obtain the correct exposure.

    Mike
