Open Letter to DJI
Mike Criss, Mavic Owner
To Whom it may Concern
I suppose it will concern the engineering and design teams at DJI.
What a marvel the DJI Mavic Pro has been. I have have had mine for almost a year and it has provided me with countless hours of joy capturing the beauty of Alaska. The footage is stunning, however, I think there could be improvements.
Card Carrying 107 operator and professional photographer
I first saw the Karma last year and thought it would be perfect, then the Mavic was announced. I was one of the people in a very long line waiting to get my Mavic. Ordered on Oct. 6th, received December 30th. On December 31st I was filming with it at -10F. Since then, I have crashed it into an iceberg, crashed into a power line and crashed into an 80 foot birch tree(long story involving RTH). I repaired the gimbal and camera myself, and had to leave the Mavic in the tree for a month while the leaves fell so I could tell which tree it was in. I replaced 2 sets of props and left it to dry for 2 days . After spending a month in the rain and wind, it powered up with no problem. Of course now I have two Mavics because I could not go any time in the fall without one. The fall lasts a very short time here, but is the most beautiful (followed closely by winter).
Keep the portability, but give me a better camera
The Mavic Pro fits our lifestyle perfectly. As a photographer, I try to put myself in the best situations to capture Alaska. That could mean a 4am hike because the sun is too high by 8am in the summer. It could also mean strapping on the snow skis and flying the Mavic at -20F. In perfect light, the Mavic camera can provide outstanding footage. Weather and light don’t always cooperate though and sometimes I have to film when the light isn’t perfect. That is where the current camera fails. The dynamic range is lacking and problems with noise and noise reduction algorithms creep into the footage.
Make a real pro version of the Mavic
We need a pro version of the Mavic with the best camera you can put on this form factor. Maybe even give us camera options. Price point can be higher that the Phantom 4 Pro and I would still buy it if the camera met expectations. Please consider this from one of the professionals out there that want/need the portability. It would be nice to have different focal lengths, adjustable aperture and a way to shut off the in camera noise reduction. However, I am not too demanding just give me a better camera.
